Venus forced to retire

Andrea Petkovic has advanced to the round of sixteen at the Australian Open thanks to the withdrawal of opponent Venus Williams. The match lasted for only six minutes since the US top seed Venus was forced to retire due to a thigh muscle injury (video) after having lost her first service game to Andrea.

In the fourth round Andrea will face Maria Sharapova (RUS | WTA 16) who took out her fellow country woman and Fed-Cup-Teammate Julia Görges in the round before. In the only encounter between the two players in 2010 in Cincinnati Sharapova took away the win.

Passionate fightback

Andrea Petkovic has advanced to the third round at the Australian Open. The 23-year-old German defeated Anne Keothavong (GBR | WTA 118) 2:6; 7:5; 6:0 in a hard-fought over three-setter. Andrea started off being nervous and Keothavong could control the match with her powerful forehand. And things got worse. When Andrea had to take a medical break in the beginning of the second set because of her ankle wound, it seemed to become a day that couldn't get any less promising for Petkorazzi.

However, the medical treatment took immediate effects on the game. Andrea managed to turn the match around and won the second set. Finding her stride Andrea left Keothavong with no chances to even win a single game in the third set. In the end she showed the same exceptional tennis that got her into the final round of Brisbane. "I am happy, it's about winning. I know that it has not been my best performance", said Andrea.

In the third round Andrea will now face Venus Williams (USA | WTA 5). "I have to improve against Venus", said Andrea. "It will definitely be a new experience." It will be the first encounter between the two players. Information on Andrea’s matches and tournaments can be found in the matchcenter.

Clear victory

Andrea Petkovic has reached the second round at the Australian Open. The 23-year-old German needed only 62 minutes to beat Jill Craybas (USA | WTA 101) 6:1; 6:2 in a one-sided match. "It was a bit windy but I managed to cope with the conditions quite fast", said Andrea. "And I served on a high level constantly."

In the second round Andrea will face Anne Khetavong (GBR | WTA 118). In their last encounter 2010 in Linz Andrea took away the win against the 27-year-old.

Kvitova too strong

Andrea Petkovic has failed to claim her second title on the WTA-Tour. The 23-year-old lost 1:6; 3:6 to Petra Kvitova (CZE | WTA 34) in the final of Brisbane. Andrea was not able to get into the match at any time and could not maintain her former performances in Brisbane. On the other hand Kvitova played a nearly perfect match and showed that she will make her way up in the future.
