Victorious in Three-Setter

Andrea Petkovic has reached the round of sixteen at the WTA-Tournament in Paris. The world's number 24 had to fight hard to take away a 7:5; 3:6; 6:2-victory in the first round over fellow countrywoman Angelique Kerber (WTA 50).

"I was a bit tired at first and felt shaky on the court", said Andrea after the match. "I just came from the Fed Cup in Slovenia where I played on clay, so I had to get used to the new surface. But you just have to pull through all of that as an athlete."

In the round of sixteen Andrea will face Kristina Kucova (SVK | WTA 225). In the only encounter between the two players at the qualification for Wimbledon 2009, Kucova won 6:7; 7:6; 6:4 in a close three-setter.

Andrea reaches quarterfinals

For the first time in her career Andrea Petkovic has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. The 23-year-old German beat former no.1 Maria Sharapova (RUS | WTA 16) 6:2; 6:3 in straight sets in the round of sixteen at the Australian Open.

"Maria didn't have her best day, that was obvious", said Andrea. "But in the end she got really strong and I'm just happy I closed it out in the end. I go for hard and flat balls usually, but today I tried it with a slice here and there and a lot of spin on her forehand." (read the post-match interview)

Andrea was in control of the match from the beginning and won the first set by taking Sharapova's serve two times in a row. In the second set the 15.000 spectators at the Rod Laver Arena saw the German Fed-Cup player going straight for the victory. She was leading 5:1 when she lost her first service game to Sharapova. But with her next service game Petkovic closed the match out by converting her third match-ball.

In the Quarterfinals Andrea will compete against Na Li (CHN | WTA 11). "It will be tough, she didn't lose a match this year", said Andrea. It will be the first encounter between the two players. Information on Andrea’s matches and tournaments can be found in the matchcenter.
