The joy of defeat

Andrea Petkovic has missed to reach the final of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati. Petko lost 6-7 (4), 1-6 to Jelena Jankovic (SRB | WTA 14) in the semifinals.

Andrea spent much of the time before the match wondering about her career because of a torn meniscus suffered in the quarterfinals against Nadia Petrova. She didn't know whether her previously repaired anterior cruciate ligament had been torn again. When an MRI revealed the injury was not too serious, there was no doubt she would go on court. “I’d rather die than retire,” Andrea said. “The audience comes and wants to see two semifinals. They pay a lot of money. I’m not the type of person to just withdraw and leave the audience out there. You know, when I go to concerts and the band comes two hours late and plays for 45 minutes and then they leave, then I’m really, really mad".

Despite her torn meniscus Petko is looking forward to playing the US Open: “I'll be ready for the US Open. If I can play the day after the injury, I can play seven days later as well."
